Penelope Van Hoorn is inspired by painting and the process. She enjoys the creative experience and the conversation that develops with the piece as it emerges, creating momentum and determining the direction.

Colour and form are applied freely, allowing what’s on the canvas to suggest the next steps. The destination of the work always has to be “right” in itself, rather than “right” as a representation of something outside of itself.

What is most important to Van Hoorn is a feeling of balance and naturalness. She wants her paintings to feel like meaningful interventions and yet also like things that have always existed, or that could evolve naturally.
