Lisa McKendrick

Born in New Zealand, Lisa is a British artist, living and working in London. Her work depicts places that are both dreamlike and uncannily familiar featuring everyday objects such as cars within settings that often slip into abstraction.

The landscapes in Lisa’s work could exist in a road trip film or an American novel, alive with the possibility of adventure and exploring new territories. Imagery within the work melts into familiar narratives where we are reminded of Alfred Hitchcocks "Psycho", Jack Kerouacs "On the Road" or "Lonesome Traveller" as she romanticises the road trip and the freedom it symbolises.

Foraging car boot sales and eBay for old slides, Lisa discovers strangers on their holidays, their discarded photos of the past. Shadows and silhouettes hint at a motel sign, a country road, a first home, a new car. Lisa’s work straddles settings that are both out of this world and very much of it weaving the unfamiliar and the quotidian into eerily charming and nostalgic works.
