Olive Berthier
Olive uses industrial gloss paints to achieve a high quality, shiny finish. ’I’m always surprised at the various ways in which the paint dries’. Look closely at her work and you will see that some paint has dried to form a crinkle effect, others have dried in pockets of gummy gloss. The contrasts in paint allow for an extra dimension of texture and surface interest to develop. Olive pours the paints onto the canvas, and then tilts the canvas, steering the paint to where she wants it. ’I don’t just throw the paint on and leave it at that! I do guide the paint to form various shapes and patterns, though I have to admit, it does have mind of its own at times and can be hard to control!’ Olives’ work is open to interpretation. Some of her titles suggest what she can see in the shapes and colour, but she’s happiest when her audience find their own objects within the paint.
