Anthony Barrow
Anthony was born in Wigan, Lancashire in 1956 he is an hourly paid lecturer and demonstrator and a member of NAPA, the National Acrylic Painters Association. As a freelance lecturer he travels around Lancashire and Greater Manchester and teaches at his own art classes in the local area. At the age of 45 Anthony decided he would follow his life long obsession with art by studying for a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree from which he graduated in 2005. The same year he won 1st prize in the prestigeuse "Art of Love Exhibition" at the Oxo Gallery, Oxo Tower Wharf in London. Since then he has been a professional painter and teacher with his work in private collections around the world.
In early 2007 Anthony was selected to appear with Rolf Harris on the "Rolf on Lowry" program a BBC televised event of the life of L S Lowry and a reproduction of one of Lowry’s painting "Piccadilly Gardens" in Manchester which was painted in 1954. The program was televised on Sunday 4th March 2007.
More recently he won the Daler Rowney Best British Paintings award for a series of works he exhibited at the NAPA 23rd International Exhibition held at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms, Ludlow, Shropshire.
Anthony’s philosophy revolves around the following statement: -
"The context within which we experience an event will determine how that event is encoded and retained" (Oxford Companion to the Mind- Richard L Gregory- 1987)
Simply meaning that we all view images in different ways, it is our own personal history that determines the emotions these images uncover.
Predominantly a figurative and portrait artist Anthony has a prolific output that often overflows into the disciplines of landscape, still life and abstract painting but capturing mood and emotion whilst sketching and painting the figure is his main inspiration.
Anthony’s fascination with the human form has led him to produce a series of works depicting beauty and motion in dance by his unique use of colour and technique of paint application.
"Dancers have very athletic bodies capable of achieving extraordinary postures these paintings are my interpretation of the dancers skills. They are like movie stills, slices of moments in time positioned on a wall space for the viewers to enjoy at their leisure."
