Ma Qun
Born in Peking in 1960, Qun started painting at the age of eight and went on to study at a Zhuanke school under Pan Tianshou and trained in traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy under Li Kuchan. Encouraged by his teacher, he exhibited his work and at the age of 21 was awarded first prize for calligraphy and painting at the University of Peking II. On his arrival in France in 1989 Qun discovered the work of Nicholas de Staël who has been a great source of inspiration for the artist.
