Jonathan Newey is an award winning artist who lives and works in Reading, England. He comes from a strong artistic background and is believed to be the 4th generation artist in his family. He has extensive experience in art and design having studied Typographic Design at the London College of Printing and has been an art tutor in adult education for over 16 years. In 2006 he published his first book titled ’Drawing with Coloured Pencil’ and has a second book being published in April 2008 titled ’Drawing and Painting Buildings’. He works in a variety of mediums and subjects but has recently started to produce a series of abstract paintings using acrylic paint on canvas.

"My painting process initially involves sketching and photography where I react to the character of a building and its surroundings. I also try to convey, at this early stage, the feeling of loneliness and neglect and the environmental conditions that these old buildings have been subjected to. I then use both the sketched and the photography to produce my finished work. I will, sometimes, scan in and manipulate photographs on the computer to further creative and emotional process. During the painting of the finished piece, I let my paint application become instinctive rather than copying the reference material I have in front of me. This results in a more personal input than I would get if I faithfully reproduced an image from the sketches and photographs."


He has work in collections both in the UK and abroad and has exhibited at a number of open exhibition venues including The Mall Galleries, London, West of England Academy, Bristol, Royal Society of Birmingham Artists and The Morphi Gallery, Limassol, Cyprus.
